Saiyuki Gaiden is an anime series created by Kazuya Minekura, produced by ICHIJINSHA and Saiyuki Production. This show is a prequel to the original story of the manga and anime series Saiyuki, and follows the four protagonists before their journey in the first series.
Set in ancient China, the series follows Genjyo Sanzo as he embarks on a dangerous journey to India to retrieve the sacred sutras. Accompanied by three other characters, Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai, the four must overcome various obstacles and battle powerful demons along their way.
In Saiyuki Gaiden, we see the same characters as young boys, long before they became the powerful warriors they are in the original Saiyuki series. The story explores their past and revels the events that led to their formation as a team that fights demons and protects humanity.
The first episode sets the scene by introducing us to the four protagonists in a small village, where they meet a young girl named Suika. Suika is on a quest to find her father, who was a famous demon hunter, and is in possession of powerful weapons that she hopes to use to avenge her father. The boys agree to help Suika in her quest, and embark on their journey.
Throughout the series, we get to see flashbacks and memories from their past that shaped them into the characters we know in the original series. The boys have different personalities, quirks, and fascinating backstories that make them lovable and relatable to fans.
As the series progresses, the plot takes on a darker and more serious tone. The four boys get caught up in a plot to take over the world, as a powerful and vengeful demon seeks to turn the world upside down.
Saiyuki Gaiden has action, drama, and suspense, just like the original series. But it also explores deeper themes such as betrayal, loyalty, and family. Every character has their own unique story to tell, and their relationships and interactions form the backbone of the series.
The animation in Saiyuki Gaiden is fantastic, and the art style is unique and captivating. The vibrant colors and attention to detail bring the world to life, and create a fantastical setting that feels like it could be real.
The series has a great soundtrack, with music that perfectly matches the scenes and tone of the show. The opening and closing themes are catchy and memorable, and the voice acting is top-notch.
Overall, Saiyuki Gaiden is an excellent prequel to the original series for fans of the show, but it also stands on its own as a great anime series. The plot is engaging, the characters are fascinating, and the animation is stunning. Whether you're new to the Saiyuki franchise or an old fan, this series is definitely worth a watch.
