MTV's SafeWord is a raunchy, laughter-inducing game show where comedians aim to outwit their celebrity guests by uncovering personal facts and embarrassing their competitors to the fullest extent. Host Carly Aquilino (Girl Code) kicks things off as she welcomes the guests and lays out the rules for the show.
Each episode features a pair of celebrity contestants, but what sets SafeWord apart from other game shows is its unique structure. The contestants are not playing for any sort of prize or reward. Instead, their goal is to avoid humiliation at any cost. Both celebrities and their respective teams of fellow comedians play games, work through challenges and engage in stunts to try and reveal embarrassing truths about their opponent.
If they succeed, the contestants will be forced to endure a tattoo on a part of their body of the opponent's choosing (which generally leads to hilarious results). To prevent this from happening, the two celebrities have a special "safe word" which they can use to stop the game in its tracks and prevent any further revelations or embarrassing moments. The safe word is private to the contestants, and their job is to keep it from their opponents and audience watching at home.
The celebrity guests featured on SafeWord vary from actors to comedians, and everyone in between. Some of the notable guests in the show include Amber Rose, Terrence J, and David Arquette, among others. The show uses pre-recorded segments to show off these celebrities in their daily life, complete with interviews and fun segments that show their personality and motivation for beating their opponent.
Of the two celebrities, one is deemed the "victim," while the other gets to play the games and wreak havoc on their opponent. Each episode features three rounds of gameplay, leading up to a final "Last Word" showdown that determines the overall winner of the episode.
The rounds are usually centered around revealing personal information: for example, some of the games the celebrities play involve them answering questions with paddles, each labeled with different answers. The catch? One of those answers is always a personal truth about themselves. In another round, celebrities are shown "cringe-worthy" moments from their social media s, and the other team must decide which post is the most embarrassing.
What sets SafeWord apart from other game shows is how it manages to surprise the guests every step of the way. There's never any telling what will happen from one moment to the next
