Li Muge's story takes place in the 1930s, where she and her lover, Wu Yue, are involved in a forbidden love affair. The two lovers come from different social backgrounds, and their love is not accepted by their families. Facing societal pressures and family obligations, the two are forced to go separate ways. Li Muge is married off to another man, and Wu Yue needs to flee the country.

Li Muge's story parallels Yan Jin's present-day world, where he is determined to help Jin Wei and her family keep their landmark afloat, even if it means going through personal sacrifices.
