Thomas Fowler is an older, bitter journalist who is living in Indochina with a young native girl in this film adaptation of the Grahame Green novel. She begins to be seduced away from him by a visiting American economist named Alden Pyle who promises to marry her. The journalist seeks his revenge by spreading rumors that the young man is actually in the country to sell weapons to the anti-Communist faction.
