This dramatic film focuses on a young mother's desperate decision to leave her teenage twin boys with their alcoholic grandmother, living in rural Hungary during the waning days of World War II. The twins don't know how to deal with their cruel and harsh new surroundings, so they embark on a program to make themselves mentally strong and physically and emotionally stoic, keeping a written record of their experiences along the way.
