The movie opens with the scene of Chris Adams (Lee Van Cleef) arriving in the town of Magdalena, New Mexico, with his wife, Laurie (Mariette Hartley), and their friend, the gunfighter-turned-preacher, Noah Forbes (Ralph Waite). Jim informs Chris that Juan De Toro is hiding in a nearby village, and together they set out to capture him. However, things go awry when they are ambushed by De Toro's men, and Noah is killed in the ensuing gunfight.

Determined to bring De Toro to justice, Chris forms a new team of gunslingers, composed of old friends and new acquaintances.
