Saul is the powerful first king of Israel who has great personal ambitions as well as the desire to make his nation greater. He does not, however, have the full blessing of the God of Israel. That blessing instead belongs to the young upstart, David. Once a mere shepherd, he has now been declared the next king, raising the jealousy of Saul.
