In the year 2025, the world is in disarray after a global war of unprecedented scale. However, amidst the chaos, a team of scientists have created a new species of genetically engineered humans that are designed to survive in the harsh new world. These mutants possess superior strength and intelligence, and are nearly indestructible. Yet, they harbor a secret that threatens to destroy everything they know.

The story centers around Captain Stockton (Leo Rossi), a former soldier who is tasked with leading a team of mercenaries to retrieve a sample of the mutant species for study. The team is ed by Dr. Heidi Stern (Denise Crosby), a brilliant geneticist who helped create the mutants. Alongside them is Lt. John Ross (Ted Prior), a skilled fighter with a personal agenda against the mutants.

As the team ventures deeper into the wilderness, they encounter all manner of deadly creatures and obstacles. They soon discover that the mutations that make the new species so formidable have also made them unstable and aggressive. The mutants have begun to turn on their creators, killing anyone who gets in their way. Now, the team must race against time to reach their objective before the mutants destroy them all.

The film follows a classic formula of an action-adventure story, with a touch of science fiction thrown in for good measure. The plot is simple enough, and the writing is serviceable. However, the real draw of the film is the action scenes, which are thrilling and well-executed. The mutants are portrayed as truly terrifying creatures, with their enhanced abilities making them nearly invincible.

One aspect of the film that stands out is the use of practical effects. The mutants are portrayed using a combination of makeup and prosthetics, which gives them a real sense of weight and presence on the screen. Likewise, the film's many action sequences are handled with a minimum of CGI, which helps to ground the action and make it feel more realistic.

Overall, Mutant Species is a solid pick for fans of action-adventure films. While it may not break any new ground in of plot or characterization, it more than makes up for it with visceral action and tense suspense. The film's reliance on practical effects help to make the mutants feel like genuine threats, and the strong performances from the cast help to sell even the most ridiculous plot twists.
