The movie begins with the Gaulish village preparing for a feast. Suddenly, a Roman spy arrives and scatters the party by revealing that Caesar plans to destroy the Gaulish village by cutting down the forest to build his new summer resort. The villagers become aware of the consequences and decide that they need to take action. They their long-time ally, Cleopatra, and ask for her help. Cleopatra offers the Gauls the opportunity to complete the palace that Caesar has commissioned her to build. However, the palace has to be finished within three months, or else Caesar will destroy Egypt.

Asterix, Obelix, and Getafix volunteer to travel to Egypt to help Cleopatra, who orders her architect, Artifis, to work with the Gauls. Despite the help of the druid’s magic potions and the strength of Obelix, Artifis is skeptical of the unusual methods that the Gaulish trio uses in their construction techniques. He believes it will take years to complete the palace, and with the deadline quickly approaching, he becomes increasingly anxious. In response, Cleopatra sends Artifis to the Roman Camp to keep him away from the construction site.

As time goes by, the palace’s construction continues with a series of misadventures created by Artifis’ assistant, Krukhut. He is ordered by Caesar to sabotage the palace construction, but his schemes always result in failure with him being the only one bearing the brunt of it. There is also an ongoing battle of back and forth pranks between the Gauls and Artifis’ assistant.

The plot thickens when Caesar suddenly decides to show up at the construction site to see the progress being made. Getafix disguises himself as a local historian who has a vast knowledge of Caesar's tastes and opinions, which allows him to stall the Roman legion while the Gauls hurriedly finish the palace.

At the conclusion of the story, Caesar is ultimately pleased with the Palace and gives up on his plan to wipe out Egypt. In the process, Cleopatra and Artifis fall in love, with the architect realizing his mistake and apologizing to the Gauls for doubting them. Meanwhile, Krukhut is sent to the salt mines, which seems to be the perfect punishment for his incompetency.
